This chart visualizes the power of dividend reinvestment over time. The green line shows portfolio growth with DRIP, the blue line shows growth without DRIP, and the gray dashed line represents your total contributions.

Year-by-Year Results

Yield on cost = dividends reinvested in that year ÷ total contributions so far. It shows how much income your original money is producing, and it rises over time even when the dividend yield you entered stays the same.

Not live market data. SCHD's dividend yield and price change every day; this page uses editable assumptions — a 3.2% dividend yield and an 8% annual return — so you can model scenarios. Nothing here is a prediction or investment advice. The 0.06% expense ratio is SCHD's published fee (Schwab); it is not deducted in this calculation. Yields observed in fall 2026 ranged roughly 2.9–3.3% (30-day SEC yield 3.08–3.32%, trailing distribution yield about 3.0–3.2%).

SCHD and DRIP: What You Need to Know

What is SCHD?

SCHD is the Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF. It tracks the Dow Jones U.S. Dividend 100 Index — about 100 U.S. companies that have paid dividends for at least ten consecutive years, screened for financial strength — and charges an expense ratio of 0.06% a year (Schwab). It pays dividends quarterly. This calculator does not use live prices: you enter a dividend yield and an annual return as assumptions, and the math is the same compounding the homepage calculator performs.

Why DRIP matters for SCHD holders

SCHD's dividend yield is roughly 3% — about three times VOO's — so the dividend is a material part of the return, not a rounding error. Reinvesting it every quarter buys more shares, those shares pay the next dividend, and the share count grows even if the price never moves. The year-by-year table below shows that accumulation, and the DRIP vs cash comparison shows what you give up by taking the dividends out.

What this calculator assumes

The dividend yield and annual return you enter stay the same every year; monthly contributions are added during the year and start earning from the next year; tax applies to dividends only, at the rate you enter; the 0.06% expense ratio and any brokerage fees are not deducted. One thing to notice: at the same 8% total return, SCHD ends behind VOO in this model — a higher yield means more of the return arrives as dividends, which are taxed each year, and less as price growth. Change any input to test a different scenario — for example, a lower return, a higher yield, or a shorter horizon.
